ENGINEERING MANAGER

Trang Nguyen has been with Jet AirWerks a little over a year & has quickly become a leader in the shop. She works diligently to answer technical questions, problem solve issues & create repair processes.

Trang was born in Bà Rịa-Vũng Tàu, Vietnam and immigrated to the US as a child. She is a graduate of Wichita State University with a Bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering & was a member of the Army Reserves.

In her free time Trang enjoys spending time with her husband, or hanging out with friends, eating & watching movies.

We asked Trang some questions to learn a little more about her.

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB?

My first job was as a server at pizza hut.

WHAT WERE YOUR HOBBIES AS A KID?

Biking with my aunt Julie who was a year older than I was.

WHO WAS THE MOST INFLUENTIAL PERSON TO YOU AS A CHILD?

My parents, because they worked a few jobs to take care their three kids with little-to-no English and earning minimum wage.

WHO HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST INFLUENCE IN YOUR CAREER?

My husband because he gave me emotional support when I was in college and starting my job.

WHAT WAS YOUR BEST JOB BEFORE JAW?

My best job was working for the Army Reserves. I got to meet new people from all over the world and experience things beyond my limits, which was exciting.

HAVE YOU FACED ANY CHALLENGES OR BIASES IN YOUR CAREER ATTRIBUTED TO YOU BEING A WOMAN? HOW DID YOU HANDLE THEM?

I have not experienced it at JAW, but I have faced some discrimination for being a woman in the past. Some people think that women can't do what a man can. To prove them wrong, I joined the Army to show that if you put your mind to it, you can achieve anything. When I was in College for mechanical engineering, there was a 1:5 ratio of women to men. Although there are more women in engineering than before, it is still a male dominated profession. I wanted to show that women can also be great engineers, so here I am.

IF YOU WEREN'T WORKING IN THIS FIELD, WHAT WOULD YOU BE DOING?

If I wasn’t an engineer, I think I would become a food critic, so I can eat and travel at the same time.

HOW DO YOU THINK YOUR COLLEAGUES AT JAW WOULD DESCRIBE YOU?

That I am full of energy and willing to help.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE WOMEN ENTERING THIS FIELD OR STARTING THEIR CAREERS?

Work hard even when no one is looking, because eventually others will notice. Always be willing to learn. It will lead you further in your career.

IF WE WENT TO HAPPY HOUR, WHAT WOULD YOU ORDER?

A cocktail and fries.

NAME THREE THINGS ON YOUR BUCKET LIST.

Travel around the world and visit South Korea, learn Korean, make enough money to support my parents in retirement.

WHAT ARE SOME CAUSES YOU CARE ABOUT?

Equality for everyone.

HOW DO YOU WANT PEOPLE TO REMEMBER YOU?

That I lived my life to the fullest with no regrets.

WHAT WOULD YOU TELL A 10-YEAR-OLD YOU?

Keep doing what you’re doing, and everything will fall into place.

WHAT IS YOUR PERSONAL MOTTO?

Think of the bright side.
